About Mary Thompson
A portion of all art sales will be donated to the Nature Conservancy to help protect our precious planet. I'm an artist from Swartz Creek, Michigan. I have been involved with art in some shape or form my entire life. I knew I wanted to become an artist during my early teenage years. I took every art class I could during middle school and high school. I also took classes at the Flint Institute of Arts during high school. I was awarded with a small art scholarship and I was accepted into the art school of my choice in Chicago, IL. Unfortunately, my fear and anxiety set in, and I chose to stay close to home and instead attended school at Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan. I attended college for about a year and a half. Basically, I wasn't focused and I had a few mental issues to deal with. I was diagnosed with social phobia and panic disorder. It caused me to quit school and lose relationships with many people. I stopped art all together for the most part. It became stressful to me. It was all about perfection, not inspiration. If you know me, you know that I am FAR from perfect. ;) Fast forward to 12 years later...my mom bought me a watercolor set for Christmas. I really never got into watercolors while I was in school. I was more of a pencil and charcoal artist, but I decided one day to give it a try. I painted a portrait of a wolf in purple and blue. When I was finished, I thought, "hey, this isn't too bad." And I've never stopped. I shared my work with family and friends. I gave them away as gifts and I sold a couple here and there. I am proud of every, single one. I choose nature and wildlife for most of my subjects. I feel at my best when I'm outside walking through a forest. I grew up playing in the woods, climbing trees, fishing, and camping. I'm from Michigan and I love all of the beauty that surrounds me, it is what truly inspires me. I hope you enjoy my work because I enjoy making it!
